Break Till You Make It

Tobias Bridger

“Maybe we should become more materialistic”

What: A coffee machine that amplifies the experience of wastefulness by making a ceramic cup disposable. Why: Consumerism tends to be viewed as an attachment to material goods, perpetuating a desire for more and more. Tobias Bridger thinks the opposite: a disvalue of material makes it easier for us to thoughtlessly replace the old with the new. Tobias believes we should actually become more materialistic through a greater attachment to material, allowing us to be more conscious of our actions towards disposal and thereby less wasteful. How: A ceramic cup is predominantly seen as stable. Making the cup disposable reveals the irrationality of recycling when posed as a conclusive solution to our wastefulness.
