Shape Looking for Function (Synthesis of Fragmented Semantics)
A speculative investigation of the development of shapes through contextualising free form in a framework of functionality: the synthesis of fragmented semantics. ‘Shape looking for function’ creates a form-meaning feedback loop to investigate the relationship between form and function from a design perspective. Can form find function? With a ‘library’ of shapes as a starting point, the connotations of these shapes have been researched. Functionless forms reach out to existing objects, functions, language, and histories through connotation. The steps of this process are visualised and factualised through diagrams presenting a close investigation of the origins of specific shapes and the role of form in functional objects. The report highlights the relation of shape and function through contextualising a shape alphabet within existing disciplines in collaboration with the trained eyes of skilled practitioners. ’Shape looking for function’ investigates the very core of the de-sign act, deconstructing the sign and proposing a new synthesis. In a visualised research report, the first steps towards a language of shape are presented.
