Work in Practice
Inspired by the abundance of material that is right at hand, Pepijn van Otterlo started building with scrap wood and waste material. The ingredients: a batch of discarded plywood sheets that were used as packaging material, any 18mm slat he could find, and the left-over lacquer paint from previous projects. Following the construction principles of the shipping crates in his studio and the hollow doors in the building, he built a strong framework and upholstered it with the thin board, creating a simple box-like form language. The result is a voluminous yet lightweight furniture collection that showcases the value of second-hand material. Its glossy industrial coating does not cover up the scratches and dents in the wood, but accentuates the imperfections, celebrating a no-nonsense, circular approach to design furniture.
