Expanding Patterns

Myrte Van Varik

Myrte van Varik has created a range of furniture cushions by using fabric as both a covering and a mould for the foam inside. First she has patterns and structures stitched industrially into the fabric, with differently arranged folds and pockets. As the soft liquid foam is cast into the fabric, it finds its own way, expanding the folds, filling in the pockets, avoiding the lines or points in the design. When the foam is set, a patterned cushion is the result. The technique allows for very fine structuring and the crafty needlework makes for beautiful and comfortable seats.
