It’s in our nature
Our urge to intertwine hands and our innate desire for connection undergo a transformative journey that culminates in porcelain sculptures. Madison van Gelder took the handshake gesture as her starting point in creating a series of intriguing flower-like shapes. Each delicate leaf is shaped by human touch, embodying the space shared between individuals and referencing how throughout history artists have used flowers to symbolise connection between people. An accompanying compilation of videos shows hands touching during the sculpting process, their opening and closing calling to mind the rhythmic cycle of a flower expressed in porcelain. This project serves as a testament to the importance of physical contact in our lives and the interconnectedness between humans and nature.
