The Bonding Boundary

Julia Owczarczak

"The culture of fences is the culture of dialogue."

WHAT An installation in a public space that creates a modicum of privacy while promoting a communal atmosphere, much like the situation between two neighbouring backyards separated by a fence. WHY Independence and privatisation have limited our connections with other people, leaving us isolated. While we claim to celebrate diversity and social exchange, we erect walls that make us indifferent and avoid unwanted communication. While walls definitively separate, fences define territory yet are porous and allow for interaction. HOW With her ‘Bonding Boundary’, Julia Owczarczak arranged fixed and mobile elements that create constantly changing and gentle divisions into zones, enabling people to reconsider their relations with one another in space.
