Virtual Craft

Frederik Pesch

What does it mean to translate the essence of an age-old craft into a digital context? In answering this question, Frederik Pesch sought inspiration in his previous training and work as a cabinet-maker. The sensation of working physically with tools generates skills and knowledge in your hands. To recreate this bond between maker and material, Frederik devised a VR wood workshop that lets you work with wood like a real craftsperson and, in the process, lets you master the tools involved, just like in a ‘physical’ workshop. His project explores the simulation of a craft to learn skills previously available in the physical world. In his virtual workshop, you can train to become a cabinet-maker without actually touching wood.
