Naar Eigen Hand
Modern knitting machines are smart and efficient, but lack the personal touch of the traditional craft. Eva Jagerman counters the digital trend by transforming a fully automated machine into a hand-driven apparatus. The enlarged wooden mechanics showcase the technique that is usually hidden. The unusual size draws attention to the making of huge stitches row by row, increasing the appreciation of both the material and the process. It requires teamwork to push the handles back and forth, and to guide the united threads from fifteen wooden bobbins into the hooks. The installation celebrates the value of honest craftsmanship, inviting makers of all sorts to a hands-on session of co-creation.
