The Myth of Privatization in the Public Sector

Alexandra Ercoli Caller

A game aims to make complex policy information about water distribution in Paris accessible and understandable to a broader audience.

In 1985, private water companies in Paris signed a 25-year contract with the municipality. However, in 2010, the city decided not to renew the contract and regained full control of water and sanitation services due to concerns about transparency and control under private management. Alexandra Ercoli Caller, based on her research into water commodification and policy impact, has created a collection of digital and physical game elements. Players assume the roles of private contractors or municipal authorities, with the objective of collecting cards and exploring sites to further their interests. Contractors aim to maximize earnings, while municipal authorities seek to ensure the common usage of water as a vital resource for citizens. The project aims to make complex policy information accessible and understandable to a broader audience.
