The Multi-Locals

WHAT An editorial campaign celebrating ‘multi-locality’, inspired by the saying ‘we are all immigrants’. WHY We should rethink the concept of national identity, says Sia Degel. Instead of asking ‘where are you from’, she asks ‘where are you a local?’. For this project she has translated the cherished characteristics of the places people named and showed her into wearable props, expressing a new, many-sided identity. HOW The local view of a mountain from Reykjavik and the colours of a river in Kolding are combined into a sculptural body suit; a photograph of a loaded cart in the streets of Santiago grows into a picturesque mask. Featured in a fashion shoot, they show the ‘Multi-Locals’ in all their beauty.
