The Fermentors

Monja Simon

A growing community of people explores fermentation as an act of radical care that can subvert the effects of industrialisation on food and bodies.

The contemporary revival of fermentation, especially in urban spaces where people are largely disconnected from their food sources, has inspired fermentation collectives and associations to grow. As part of this wider-spread movement, The Fermentors is a growing network of microbial and human bodies nurturing relationships, and exploring the care and cultivation of ferments. Originating from the communal fermentation rituals of the Black Forest and thriving in the institutional context of Design Academy with its international community, the project emphasises the importance of reactivating and preserving situated material practices. It professes that it is through radical care and embodied knowledge transmission that collaborative action against the adverse effects of industrialisation can be envisioned.
